Dark Chocolate (DC) is again a proven winner, this time with increased athletic performance and stamina, as reported in the Journal of the international Society of Sports Nutrition. It seems that DC increases circulating nitric oxide which seems to increase blood flow through and glucose uptake of muscles. The study showed that VO2max, which basically means maximum oxygen usage increased by 6%, which could mean performance could be boosted by up to 6%.
Interestingly beetroot juice has a similar effect, but we can’t imagine drinking a pint of it before gym.
Dark chocolate may be good for you but shift working is definitely bad. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that shift workers had a small but definite increased risk of heart attack. They studied nurses doing night shift over 24 years and showed an up to 24% increased risk of heart issues. If you are a shift worker you need to pay particular attention to other heart risk factors such as blood pressure, smoking and cholesterol. Make sure you have had these checked recently.
